hold off hard-charging Knights for x-country crown

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary cross-country coach Colin Ward figured
to be in a position this year to be ready to unseed Lockerby Composite
as the Vikings attempted to register a 10th straight overall aggregate
championship. And it was close, to be sure, as Lockerby held on by the slimmest
of margins, clipping Lo-Ellen 50-48 in the total points event.
The day was highlighted by a number of interesting races as athletes
competed in six different categories. In the Midget girls event, Amy Stewart
(St Charles College) and Kristine Lalonde (Lasalle) continued their
season-long duel as Stewart bounced back from a loss in the fourth and final
preliminary race to take the city championship by 41 seconds.
The Midget boys competition produced a surprise winner as Colin Lammi
(Lo-Ellen Park) picked up his first win of the season at the best possible
time, clipping teammate Owen Montpellier by nine seconds as the Knights
registered a 1-2 finish. "He's (Lammi) been getting better every race but
there was no indication that he could win" observed a pleasantly surprised
Colin Ward.
"But he's probably the athlete that works the hardest" added Ward.
In fairness, it should be noted that the Knights' Stephane Jacques, who
would have easily outdistanced the midget grouping, competed at the senior
level as Ward utilized some team strategy in attempting to narrow the gap with
Lockerby. Jacques will compete as a midget when the NOSSA event is held next
Friday in North Bay.
After capturing the midget girls race in 2004 with a fair bit of ease,
Macdonald-Cartier junior Jessica Porlier was put to a much tougher test
this year, outkicking Courtney Borne (Lockerby) in the final 400m to
secure her second consecutive win. The tight race surprised Porlier a little.
"I didn't go to a lot of races this year and I had never seen the
second place runner (Borne) before" said Porlier. Given the close finish,
the Grade 10 Panther will undoubtedly add Thursday's race to her repertoire of
race strategies moving forward. "I knew that when she would pass, I would
have to try and outsprint her...I was just thinking to go as fast as I
could" stated Porlier, who is also a member of the Panhellenic 1990
girls who compete in the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL).
The Junior Boys race would see the Lo-Ellen Park Knights team upstage their
Midget counterparts by nabbing all three of the top spots as Julien Sequoin,
Myles Towns and Dustin Ryan completed a clean sweep. The Knights' Renee
Jacques continued her dominance of the Senior girls division, completing
the 6km course with a 25 second lead over second-place Tika Patrie of
Lockerby.
And Kyle Caverson looks to be making the most of his final year of
secondary school athletics, picking up a 30-second win over fellow Track North
teammate Eric Ouellette. Following are the top six finishers in all age
classifications:

Saturday, November 5th in Kingston and the Camden Braes Golf and Country Club
